About Ilia Kovalev

Experience

2025–2026

Gold Apple,

Product Design Manager

Gold Apple is one of the biggest beauty retailers in its region, and I led the design of its loyalty program. It taught me how much emotion a loyalty program can hold. My team and I rebuilt it from scratch and turned it into something people enjoyed coming back to, not just a discount card.

Every new piece had to fit a fast-growing ecosystem without breaking it. I spent as much time aligning product, engineering, and business as I did designing. Taking the product to the Gulf and China showed me how differently people shop, gift, and read a screen.

2024–2025

Avito,

Staff Product Designer

Avito is one of the world's largest classifieds platforms, best known for used goods. I worked on a hard question: how do you make a flea market feel trustworthy enough to buy something new? It was one of Avito's key growth bets, a new direction inside a mature platform.

My role was to balance how people behaved, what the business wanted, and what operations could support. I helped build a dedicated space for new items from verified sellers and gave it a look of its own. I also designed tools that helped sellers price their items fairly.

2023–2024

VK,

Product Design Manager

VK was my first time building a team from the ground up. I brought designers from different disciplines together around several large media platforms and set the standards we worked by.

We made content easier to discover and simplified the tools editors used every day. We also brought generative AI into editorial and ad production as a practical tool rather than a gimmick. That meant aligning creative, legal, and business teams around something none of them had done before.

2020–2023

MTS,

Product Design Manager

After the promotion, my job shifted from designing screens to creating the conditions for good design. I mentored designers, set clearer processes and quality standards, and worked more closely with product and engineering leads. I also led accessibility, making products usable for people who are often left out. Over time, design became a stronger voice in how the business made decisions.

MTS,

Senior Product Designer

At MTS, a large telecom, I designed a task manager for freelancers and small businesses. It started as a rough first version, and I took it to a full product, from the brand to every screen of the app and website. The goal was never to add features. It was to make their daily work feel manageable. That's where I learned how much logic can hide behind a simple interface.

Approach

Every product is a system of decisions. Some are visible, most are not. Before I change anything, I try to understand how those decisions connect. Products get simpler when complexity is well organized, not when it's hidden.

Teams work the same way. I care about alignment, trust, and the conditions for good decisions as much as the product itself. Clear teams build clear interfaces.

People about me

Avito

Stanislav Prushinsky,

Head of Product at Avito

I worked with Ilia at Avito, where he helped shape a new marketplace experience for verified new products. What stood out was his ability to think beyond design execution: he challenged assumptions, connected customer needs with business opportunities, and helped turn an ambiguous idea into a clear product direction.

Ilia combines strong design judgment with commercial awareness and can influence senior stakeholders without relying on formal authority. I would gladly work with him again.

Avito

Natalia Serezhnikova,

Head of Product Design at Instories, ex-Avito

I managed Ilia at Avito and saw firsthand how effectively he handles complex, high-impact product challenges.

He brings strong product thinking, systems thinking, and design craft to his work. Ilia does not simply respond to a brief; he looks for the real problem, challenges the product logic, and helps the team build a stronger direction.

He is highly autonomous, thoughtful, and influential, which makes him particularly strong in Staff-level and senior design leadership roles.

VK, MTS

Alexey Chupin,

Chief Design Officer at VK, ex-MTS

I worked with Ilia at VK, where he built and led a multidisciplinary product design team across several large media platforms.

He quickly brought structure to a complex environment, raised design standards, developed a strong team, and created a culture built on trust, ownership, and honest feedback.

Ilia also led the adoption of generative AI workflows across editorial and advertising production, aligning creative, legal, procurement, and business stakeholders. He knows how to move from vision to execution and help talented people perform at their best.

Things I’m Drawn To

Flowers, plants, and gardens. Architecture, graphic design, Bauhaus, and the International Typographic Style. Beauty culture, boats, aircraft, airports, photography, and the character of cities: the layered grandeur of Saint Petersburg, the everyday elegance of Copenhagen, the calm of Lucerne, the quiet confidence of Oslo, Italy's dolce far niente, and Stockholm's lagom.

I'm also curious about how communities form, how culture shapes everyday life, and how charities create real change. It all comes down to the same thing: people, culture, beauty, and the systems that quietly shape how we live.
